Big Idea: God promises to be with and bless the followers of Jesus.

 I.       Why should we be happy in following Jesus?

A.    God promises to be with us (vv. 1-3).

“Now there was a famine in the land. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. And the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you’” (vv. 1-2).

“’Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you…and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father’” (v. 3).

B.     The Gospel  (v. 4).

“’In your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed’” (v. 4).

Big Idea: Our worship should be joyful, God-centered, and knowledgeable.

 I.       How should we worship?

A.    Joyful, not joyless (vv. 1-2, 4).

“Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!” (v. 1).

“Serve the LORD with gladness! Come before his presence with singing!” (v. 2).

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!” (v. 4).

B.     Actively God-centered not self-centered (vv. 1-2, 4).

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!” (v. 1).

Serve the LORD with gladness! Come before his presence with singing!” (v. 2).

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!” (v. 4).

C.    Knowledgeable, not shallow (vv. 3, 5)

Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (v. 3).

Big Idea: God warns the unrepentant and dwells within us. Thank God that he battles our sin!

 I.       How does God help us in our daily battle with sin?

A.    By warning the unrepentant (vv. 1-4).

Introduction.

“This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses” (v. 1).

Paul warns.

“I warned those who sinned before and the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them” (v. 2).

1 Corinthians 5:2; 2 Corinthians 12:20-21

Jesus is powerful.

“Since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you” (v. 3).

Gospel.

“For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God” (v. 4).

1 John 2:2

B.     By dwelling within us (vv. 5-10).

The test of Jesus within.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?” (v. 5).

Restoring and building up.

“For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for” (v. 9).

“For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down” (v. 10).

C.    What is God’s command for us?

“It is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and all for your upbuilding, beloved” (v. 19).

B.     Speak truth to one another (12:20-21).

“For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish-that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder” (v. 20).

“I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced” (v. 21)

“So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a message of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited” (v. 7).

“Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me” (v. 8).

B.     To reveal his strength

Jesus’ grace and power

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ ” (v. 9a).

Paul’s boast and contentment

“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (v. 9b)

“For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (v. 10).

 I.       Why do we as Christians suffer?

A.    Do we suffer because we are not spiritual enough?

“Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one-I am talking like a madman-with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death” (v. 23).

Suffering of persecution (vv. 24-25).

“Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one” (v. 24).

“Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned.” (v. 25).

Suffering of ministry travel (vv. 25-27).
